Update: Training, continuous development

Management reported at the Strategy and Development Forum on 14 May that the new training programme was to start the following week. There will be fewer Station Supervisors in each class. We asked how this will be achieved with the existing number and trainers, suggesting that more trainers' posts should be created.

Travelling a Long Way for Training Workshops

Many staff, particularly at outlying stations, are annoyed at how far they are expected to travel to workshops such as 'Time for Action' and 'Valuing Time', held in a central London location.

RMT asked management to use a variety of venues, so for example, staff could attend the workshops in Wembley, or Stratford, or Acton, or Morden, if that was more local to their usual workplace. Management refused.

Changing The Workers, Not The Work

Last week, I went to one of LUL's 'Time for Action' workshops for Station Supervisors. Every Supervisor on the Underground will be going to one of these events.

So what is it all about? It's all part of management's plan to stop us being 'dinosaurs', make us 'unafraid of change', and get us to supervise station staff more effectively ie. get them to work harder. I came away feeling strongly that the key theme was to change the workers rather than to change the way that work is organised. LUL does not intend to change itself; it intends to change us.
