Defend Our Jobs: Defend Our Staffing Levels
Submitted by janine on Sun, 18/11/2007 - 00:00
- Eleven stations on the Bakerloo and District lines have now transferred from Silverlink to London Underground. RMT welcomes the transferring staff into our region, and the stations themselves back into the public sector. The new staff will get better pay and conditions. But LUL intends to delay this by several months. RMT is demanding that as soon as they put on an LUL uniform (11th November), they should get LUL pay.
- Against strong objection from RMT and TSSA, LUL is using security guards and agency staff on these stations. There have been several incidents already, including one in which the security guard’s absence caused delays to the Bakerloo service and potentially put staff and passengers at risk.
- LUL management refuses to drop its proposal to introduce ‘mobile supervision’ on these stations in the future. Under this plan, a Supervisor would cover several stations at once, responding to incidents as they occur. It is an obvious risk to operational standards and safety, as well as to jobs.
- RMT believes that the use of mobile supervision, agency staff and security guards will not stop with the transferring stations. If LUL gets away with this, they will be intent on doing the same elsewhere.
- LUL management may have agreed to delay implementing of their ticket office cuts and closures, but they are still intent on devastating ticket office provision. RMT continues to campaign against this plan, winning a lot of public support. Sign our online petition: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/tubetickets/.
- So, what are we going to do about it? RMT is moving towards dispute with LUL on all these issues. Over the next couple of weeks, we will have a series of discussions with our reps and activists about how to fight management’s attacks. Make your feelings known - talk to your rep, come to the station grades meeting, or contact Janine Booth.
