East London Line - Keep It Public!
Next month, on 22nd December, the East London Line will close for its long-awaited extension to be built. But when it re-opens, it will be operated not by London Underground, but by a private operator (LOROL, trading name of MTR Laing).
Station staff, as well as other grades, are being transferred off the line, with no right to return when it reopens. The new operator is likely to replace them with staff on inferior pay and conditions.
Any private operator’s priority is profit, so we can expect to see service standards slip, safety compromised, and customer service neglected. We can expect this because we have seen it on the rest of the private railway network.
It is not too late to stop Ken Livingstone privatising the East London Line. Join RMT’s protest, and help your union step up its efforts to stop this sell-off.
