FAQs: Job Cuts

Here are some questions being asked by staff about the London Underground's current round of job losses ...

Before answering the questions, a caveat. It is RMT's intention to stop these job cuts. Lots of staff, understandably, are saying "I am being displaced". But at present, the truth is that management plan to displace you. We plan to stop them.

1, if I am being displaced to save money from the budget, can there really be another job for me?

No. LU is planning to cut jobs, not create them.

2, If they have worked out that I need to be displaced from my current station, why haven’t they worked out which station they are sending me to?

Unions and management are discussing a proposal whereby if management scrap a post, the member of staff holding that post will be displaced within the (in some cases, reorganised) group that their station is part of - in most cases, as an extra reserve. But management won't want to hold onto all those 'extra' staff for too long, so we fear a further disciplinary clampdown. More on this issue here

3, Can there really be 500 to 800 jobs out on the underground waiting to be filled with the displaced members of staff?

No, there are not.

4, If there is another job for me somewhere, why have they spent millions of pounds displacing staff when they could have just asked me to move?

If management plan to scrap your post, there is probably not another post for you.

5, My local manager says he will look after me and find me a job. Is that possible?

Local managers do not have special rights to 'look after' chosen people outside of the processes.

6, There are no jobs on LUL stations, so when I am displaced from my station and management have guaranteed me a job, will I go into the SRT or will that job be in redeployment and that job only last 13 weeks?

See question 2 above.

7, When this job cuts situation is sorted and I remain employed by LUL, will my job be safe?

If RMT fights hard and wins, then your job will be pretty safe - at least until the next battle! If LUL gets its way and meets little resistance, then the company will feel that it can do what it wants with your job.
