Staff Assault Figures Reveal Danger of Job Cuts

assaultAttached are figures for assualts on staff at London Underground stations. Please note that these figures are:

  • for 2009/10 so far, up to 1 February - so, for less than a year
  • for assaults reported via the EIRF system only, so probably a significant under-estimate.

The figures show:

  • A total of 1,568 assaults.
  • That assaults have taken place at virtually all London Underground stations.
  • That on several stations, there have been more than 40 assaults so far during 2009/10 - around one per week at each of these stations.
  • The top ten stations for assaults are Liverpool Street, Victoria, Earl's Court, Bank, Leicester Square, Oxford Circus, Angel, King's Cross St Pancras, Waterloo and West Brompton.
  • There have been 83 racially-aggravated assaults on staff so far during 2009/10 - around two per week.

Station staff know from experience that we are more vulnerable to assault when we are working alone, and when passengers are angry about ticketing problems. Therefore, London Underground's plans to drastically cut ticket office opening times and gateline staffing levels will make us more vulnerable to assault. Even though there will be fewer staff, we will be more likely to be the victims of violence.

These figures show that we already face an unacceptable level of violence at work. LUL's job-cutting plans will only make this worse.
