Questions to Mayor about Cuts and Closures

Navin Shah, Labour GLA member for Brent & Harrow, has tabled some questions to the Mayor about London Underground's plans to cut jobs and close ticket offices, and plans to table more. The questions (and an answer) are copied below.

Raising the issue like this helps keep up the pressure on political decision-makers and builds the momentum of our campaign. This came about because Heathrow group RMT rep Raj Vyas persistently lobbied Navin to take up the issue. Other reps should try lobbying their GLA member (and MP) as well. Ticket Offices: Question No: 750 / 2010

Have you decided which 144 ticket offices you wish to close? Are you able to reassure residents of Outer London boroughs that they will not feel the biggest effects of this move, given lower passenger numbers per station?

Answer from the Mayor:

I have made a very firm commitment that all London Underground stations, including those in Outer London areas, will continue to have staff available to assist customers whenever services are running.

Questions scheduled for March:

I would appreciate a satisfactory answer to 750/2010. Have you decided which 144 ticket offices you wish to close? Are you able to reassure residents of Outer London boroughs that they will not feel the biggest effects of this move, given lower passenger numbers per station? Would you accept that ‘staff available’ is not the same as a manned ticket office? Please define your definition of a ‘firm commitment’. Would you call this as firm a commitment as the petition you signed in North Harrow in the 2008 campaign?

Metropolitan Line Staffing
Can you confirm reports TfL are planning to introduce a new formula for staffing at sub-surface line stations? Are you concerned that this may lead to a situation where many stations, presumably the lesser used ones in Outer London, are staffed at the minimal level allowed by government fire regulations introduced after the King's Cross fire?
