Job Cuts: The Gory Details

Here are the details of management's plans to decimate London Underground station staffing ...

STATIONS
----------------

[1] Will get rid of 45% of current TOM transactions i.e. 70,000 transactions per day. Will leave us with 144 ticket offices with POM only service. Only ticket offices with windows open selling tickets will be those in key locations. All other ticket offices will eventually close. This will mean a reduction of 60% in all window hours. Job losses will be :

[a] Phase 1 - loss of between 500/600 SAMFs

[b] Phase 2 - Loss of up to 750 SAMFs

[c] Phase 3 Loss of up to 900 SAMFs - cynically, with opportunity for more job losses if Minimum Numbers issue successfully addressed!

[2] Disbanded Groups :

  • Oxford Circus - Into Marylebone and Charing Cross Groups
  • Notting Hill - Into Greenford and Bond Street Groups
  • Barkingside - Into Leyton and Buckhurst Hill Groups
  • Victoria - Into Blackhorse Road and Brixton Groups
  • Canary Wharf - Into London Bridge and Stratford Groups
  • Leicester Square - Into Finsbury Park and Green Park Groups
  • Camden Town - Into Edgware, Finchley Central, Goodge St and Oval Groups

This will mean a loss of the following jobs: 7 GSMs, 25 DSMs, and 14 Admin ( 46 Admin jobs are to be lost over the whole of LUL). Plus, 21 additional operational Station Staff jobs can be saved through reductions in the Reserve Staff!

DSM JOB LOSSES
------------------------
[1] Currently 16 Groups with 6 DSMs and 2 Groups with 7 DSMs. Plan is to reduce all these Groups to only 5 DSMs each, thus cutting 20 DSM jobs.

[2] Furthermore, it is planned that for People and Competence Licensing issues there will only be 4 DSMs per line and for Coverage issues only 1 DSM per line. When you take into account the fact that there will also then be no DSMs allocated to cover Incident Management ( this will seriously affect Safety when you consider also trying to cut minimum numbers) on any Line, then there is a total loss of over 200 DSM jobs.

[3] None of the above includes DMTs, whose future is not set out but who surely must be facing even greater cuts when you consider the large numbers of them at every Train Crew Depot across LUL.

TOM/GSM JOB LOSSES
-------------------------------

[1] 10 Locations are planned for amalgamation. They are ; [a] Rickmansworth [b] Leyton [c] Brixton [d] Acton Town Picc [e] Arnos Grove [f] Earls Court [g] Stratford [h] Wembley Park [i] Elephant and Castle and [j] Seven Sisters Depot and Blackhorse Road.

To sum up, the above Job Losses add up as follows :
900 SAMFs (at least)
250 DSMs/GSMs/TOMs
50 ADMIN
---------
TOTAL: 1200 (minimum)
---------

Please Note : These figures do not include anything to do with CSAs and SUPERVISORs whose future is not known but, when you look at the way that other Grades will be decimated, it does not take much imagination to realise that their numbers will be badly hit as well. But, what the hell, we will have well over 1200 people to find jobs for so they should not have any problem in filling all them vacancies out there which have been left unfilled for months!
