Letter to 'On the Move': Station Supervisor Recruitment Campaign
I have written the following letter to On The Move (names removed as this is a public website)
In October's OTM, Canary Wharf CSA *** wrote to complain about the Station Supervisor recruitment campaign which required applicants to hold a multi-functional licence. Many staff agree with ***'s views on this.
When this recruitment campaign was advertised, RMT immediately raised a protest with management, making the point that "Those grades who are excluded - be they CSAs, drivers, admin staff or others - should be entitled to apply to be a Station Supervisor. There is already widespread low morale among staff due to the chaotic and unfair way in which London Underground's promotion system has operated over the last few years, and this discriminatory advertisement will simply serve to lower morale even further."
In a welcome but sadly unusual move, London Underground management accepted RMT's complaint and withdrew the advert that had caused so much anger among staff.
However, it seems that Human Resources Director *** does not know this, as her reply to *** defends the campaign and therefore implies that LUL stands by it. I am writing this letter in order to correct that error.
Instead of her lengthy attempt to justify this discriminatory and unfair recruitment campaign, *** could simply have replied to ***, "Thank you for expressing your concerns. RMT raised the same objections with management, who accepted them and withdrew the offending advert."
