Station Staff Solid

Congratulations to all members, who showed during the recent strike action what being part of this great trade union is about. Throughout London underground only a few Scab members came into work but these few were not enough to get stations open even though the usual office employees were there too.

Having stations closed meant trains could not run and although LU released fabricated information stating they had run half of their usual train service, information the RMT has received show that only around 20% of trains ran and these were on very limited shuttle services eg. Piccadilly line services Arnos Grove to Cockfosters (and Oakwood was closed) - some service! On the basis of the last week's press releases LUL fabricating information isn’t very surprising.

For those of you who haven’t seen the latest leaflets explaining the truth behind managements lies, which were repeated by the London and National press with the intent of undermining our successful action please log on to the RMT London Calling website and download an up-to-date leaflet which explains the facts about our dispute or speak to your local rep for more information.

We as a Union have not been the antagonists in this dispute and have been available to talk at all times. It has been LU who have stalled and frustrated the whole process.

Q): Why did it take them (LUL) almost 3 months to sit down and start negotiating when they asked our pay claim to be in at the start of November?

Q): Why are they (LUL) going back on a deal of no compulsory redundancies that the previous Mayor himself had signed?

Q): Why are they (LUL) continuing to bully staff over attendance and minor issues then sending people straight to Company disciplinary interviews and sacking them on spurious charges?

Cuts, Cuts and more Cuts are the answer. If the 'no compulsory redundancy' agreement is torn up, the front line staff will be the next to go. A predicted 1000 jobs on LU and 3000 on TfL will not save the predicted £3.5 billion that Tfl need to make over the next 18 months. With the attacks on ticket office staff resurfacing, it is obvious where the next cuts will be aimed.

New train stock is being manufactured which will be fully automatic thus enabling LUL to go for Train Operator jobs eventually, and with the attempts to slowly de-staff non-section-12 stations, SSMF and SS2 jobs are also under threat. As staff look to further their careers the potential for promotion is being eroded and only through this union's action are we stalling the process.

Collectively we need to continue the fight so we can put a full stop to this blatant attack on our members' jobs. Let us not forget the impact of safety and the additional workloads for staff in the event of mass job cuts.

Hold workplace meetings and debate what is going on around you. Get involved and educate yourself about the real truth behind this dispute. See what is really going on with the Mayor's involvement and his political aspirations of trying to 'do a Thatcher' and smash the unions in our industry.

Remember that the benefits we all enjoy have been earned by continuous struggles over the years by your fellow union members sticking together and not by management's goodwill. Inform your colleagues who came to work about how their selfish actions have impacted on our dispute; the old excuse of not being able to afford it doesn’t wash. None of us want to lose money but can we afford not to strike? If we roll over and take these attacks, jobs will go and wages will drop. Tell them to look at National rail if they don’t believe what will happen if LUL get their own way.
