Know Your Rights: Platform Duties
Spent more than 2 hours working on a platform and wondered why you had to put up with the noise, heat and dust for so long?
The reality is after 2 hours on platform duties you should be rotated to another work location such as a gateline. There is a Health and Safety agreement which states that the longest staff should spend on platform duties is 2 hours, after which staff should be rotated to another location on the station. This does not mean you only do one 2 hour stint on the plaforms in any given duty, but it does ensure that there is a proper break from the noise, heat, dust or the freezing cold at this time of the year. Obviously it would be expected that the rotation is done on a fair and equal basis for all staff.
Minutes relating to this agreement can be found on the Stations Safety Council minutes of May 2004, minute number 37.
