Nuclear Trains on the Tube

The previous London Mayor Ken Livingstone commisioned a Nuclear Transportation Risk Assesment for London due to concerns about trains carrying nuclear waste through London. This was awarded to Serco Assurance Limited.

Where do these trains travel? Over the Bakerloo Line and the London Overground, on both slow and fast lines. They run through many joint stations including Willesden Junction, Stratford, Highbury and Islington,
Kensington Olympia, West Brompton and the new Shepherds Bush rail Station next to the tube station.

These trains are operated by Direct Rail Services (DRS), a fully-owned subsidary of the Nuclear Decommisioning Authority (NDA).

And yet local London Underground emergency plans give no guidance or contact details for staff to follow in the event of an incident. There are no Nuclear Information posters on display similar to the Health and Safety Law poster. There are also concerns about the robustness of these trains during a fire in a tunnel section, and their ability to with stand the impact if they fall more than 9m down an embankment in an open section.

What research have LUL done into a Nuclear train incident at a section 12 station such as Wembley Central which although not a tunnel station is a cut and cover station with increased risks .

Worried? We are certainly entitled to be. We need urgent answers from management and loud questions from the unions.
