Charing Cross group strike: report
A quick initial report - more from the local rep later. Today's strike in defence of sacked CSA Jerome Bowes(which started last night) was 100% solid, with no strike-breaking by station staff. Some drivers refused to cross the picket line. Management, though, kept the stations open by bringing in managers, RCIs and admin staff, having issued them with licences over the last few days.
An incident on the picket line illustrated just how important the issue behind the strike is. A member of the public shouted racist abuse and physically assaulted two RMT reps on the picket line, punching one on the nose and throwing a traffic cone at another. It seems that by sacking Jerome, LUL has given out a message that it is OK to attack staff, and this particular person took them up on it! Unlike in Jerome's case, the assailant was arrested.
