VICTORY! Unions Save Tube Ticket Offices

It's official - we have saved London Underground's ticket offices from the threat of closure.

Following Boris Johnson's unequivocal statement two weeks ago, RMT reps asked London Underground Ltd to confirm that the closure plans are now scrapped. The company's reply was "We haven't been notified officially, but if the Mayor says they are off the table, then they are off the table". LUL has promised us a letter to confirm this.

This is a fantastic victory for RMT, whose campaign (alongside TSSA) put enough pressure on the Mayor to give him no choice but to scrap his predecessor's closure plans. In Spring 2007, LUL announced plans to close 40 ticket offices and cut the opening hours of most of the rest, with the loss of around 270 posts. Since then, the union, our reps and members have: given out thousands of leaflets to the public alerting them to the threat; run an online petition on the Downing Street website; run a rank-and-file campaign committee; organised local public meetings alongside residents' and passengers' groups; and attended local and company-wide negotiating meetings taking an uncompromising line against cuts. We also included the threat to ticket offices in our dispute with the company over 'casualisation' earlier this year, which saw an 80+% vote for strike action.

So a big thank you to everyone who gave out a leaflet, signed a petition, talked to your friends or workmates, made your opposition known to management, hassled your MP, went to a meeting, voted Yes in the strike ballot, or did anything else to contribute to this important win. You have saved your ticket office and your workmates' jobs.

Remember: The unions and our members won this - Boris Johnson cancelled the closure plans not because of some kind of generosity on his part but because our campaign put so much pressure on him that he felt compelled to scrap the closures to avoid loss of support.

RMT and its members have every reason to celebrate, and we will be organising an event to do just that. Watch out for publicity and check this website for details.
