Special Requirements Team Staff: Know Your Rights
Here is a concise guide to your rights for SRT staff. You can find the full official policy here.
As the SRT is new, it is especially important for staff to know your rights and to assert them, as management are trying to ‘push the boundaries’ and use you in ways that they should not. If they are able to get away this, then you as an SRT staff member will have an even heavier workload and more difficult working life. In addition, management will use you to help them de-staff our stations, to the detriment of the whole workforce.
So – stand up for your rights. If management breach any of these rights, contact RMT immediately.
WHERE YOU WORK
- You can be deployed anywhere within a nominated ‘SRT residential zone' and the ‘SRT central zone’.
- You may be asked to work outside of the SRT central zone and not within your SRT residential zone with your agreement ie. you have the right to refuse. Travelling time will be within the allocated duty or paid as overtime.
- You can carry out a mutual changeover of residential zone and/or roster links with another member of SRT staff.
WHAT DUTIES YOU DO
- Your role is to provide additional support to station groups during events and projects.
- You can not be used to cover rostering arrangements which rostered or reserve staff would cover such as: sickness, absence, leave, training and vacancies.
- If you are appropriately licensed and familiarised, you can fulfill roles within a station’s Congestion Control and Emergency Plan and can be counted towards the minimum numbers set with the CCEP.
- You can only be counted towards the minimum number required to keep a Section 12 station open in unforeseen circumstances, sickness or absence for that shift only.
HOURS, DUTY TIMES, REST DAYS
- You must be provided with 28 days notice of duties and rest days. Your rest days can not be changed without your agreement.
- You will be advised of your duties for the following week by midday Thursday.
- You cannot be required to work more than 7 days in a row or 8 to facilitate a long weekend
- You cannot work more than 5 hours without a meal break
- If you work more than your contractual hours in a 12-week period, the extra hours will be paid at overtime rate. If you think you are being given excessive extra hours, contact RMT. If you work less than your contractual hours in a 12-week period, you can be required to work the shortfall, but only in the next 12-week period and only up to 8 hours.
ROSTER LINKS
- If you work ‘early fixed links’, you will start work between 6 and 8am.
- If you work ‘late fixed links’, you will usually start work between 3 and 5pm, but may occasionally work night duties for special events.
- If you work ‘mixed links’, your duties will usually take place during the traffic day, but you may occasionally work night duties for special events.
- Mixed link duty start times can be moved by up to 2 hours. A minimum of 24 hours notice will be given by mutual agreement.
